Good Migrations Studios was founded by Alaskan artist Steve Cross, an avid fisherman and conservationist, spending his time traveling across the Western United States. He calls his pieces "coddiwomples" - wandering purposefully without a fixed destination. Each unique piece of artwork contains rare and unusual materials from around the world, including glacier silt, gold, moon dust, meteorite, gemstones, octopus ink, fossils, and fluorescent minerals.
Cross developed and patented a technique for pigments and paints that allows him to work anywhere in extreme environments, from arctic cold to tropical heat. His pigments use a unique blend of whiskey, rum, and honey in the base, making colors from flower seeds, cephalopod ink, rust, scat, berries, and other biologicals. Cross also tends to hide designs in his artwork with mountain ranges, constellations, state outlines, and more.
Each piece is an invitation to become more lost than found.
Included with each piece a card containing an overview of information about his process and a list with some of the gemstones used in his art pieces.
