In the summer of 1881, an ambitious 27 year old photographer ventured into Yellowstone National Park for the first time... he became “The Official Photographer of Yellowstone.”

Frank J. Haynes established a studio in the Park, one of the first businesses. He captured images of Yellowstone’s earliest years. Published in 1883, Yellowstone National Park is regarded as the first souvenir album produced for Yellowstone. It features Haynes’ photographs using a unique lithographic process. Haynes published a second lithographic keepsake in 1889, Souvenir Yellowstone National Park. Both are reprinted here for the first time.

Through the souvenir albums and photographs of F. Jay Haynes, we’ll be your tour guide for a historic journey through Yellowstone as it was in the 1880s.
