American Bison are largest land animals in North America and at one time they roamed much of continent with numbers in the tens of millions. In their yearly migrations across the plains the bison herds wore paths into the earth that were then used by the Native Americans and many years later became the routes of railway lines. Both males and females have horns, but the males are distinguished by being larger and growing long black beards. The bison's hair is much longer and shaggier in the front of their bodies, with their heads being heavily insulated. This is why they stand facing into the winter winds.
