There are 19 different subspecies of coyote. While the southwestern United States is a stronghold for the animal they have also expanded in several different waves, in modern and prehistoric times, in all directions. Their current range now extends into Mexico and Central America, farther North to the arctic regions, and stretches to both the East and West coasts of America. Despite humans being their predominant threat, the highly adaptable coyote has found people useful not only for providing scavenging opportunities but also for inadvertent access to domesticated livestock as a food source.
