Snowy Owls vary in color; females and young ones have dark scalloping along the edges of the their feathers and banding on the tail feathers but as the males age they get progressively whiter. They nest on the ground but usually on top of a boulder or mound so as to have a clear look out of the surrounding area. Other names for the creature include Tundra Ghost, Scandinavian Nightbird and White Terror of the North.
