Pronghorns can maintain speeds of 30 mph and are able to launch into a quick sprint of 60 mph, bounding over 20 feet at a time, making them the second fastest land animal after the cheetah. They achieve this by having a large wind pipe combined with heart and lungs that are twice as large as animals of comparable size. The adults all have horns, with the males' being larger. Unlike all other hoofed creatures, they shed the sheath, the horn's outer layer. The males do this every fall, but the females only shed their sheathes every two to five years.
